The GreenVolt project will realise the deployment of floating offshore wind at scale with up to 35 floating turbines providing an installed capacity of 560MW. Aker will lead the overall system design work, including the high-voltage offshore infrastructure. With completion planned for 2029, the project - a collaboration between Vårgrønn and Flotation Energy - will support the electrification of offshore oil and gas platforms with a target of reducing operational carbon emissions by more than 80%.
Offshore wind power generation based on floating structures rather than fixed structures permits the deployment of turbines in larger and deeper offshore areas with higher wind potential. The project aims to establish the first commercial-scale floating wind farm in Europe and will contribute to the UK's ambitions to become a world leader in floating offshore wind.
